Microchip Implantation

A lost pet is far more likely to become reunited with its owner if it is microchipped.

A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification.  The chip is very small – about the size of a grain of rice – and is implanted just under the skin, between the shoulder blades at the back of the pet’s neck.  Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner.  The microchip number is recorded on a database registry with details about the animal and owner.  Should a pet become lost; vets, animal shelters and local councils can scan the pet for a microchip and contact the owner via the database.

The Queensland State Government has passed new laws governing pets and microchips. The law states that it is now compulsory that your dog/cat be microchipped if:

  • born after 10 April 2009
  • sold or given away
  • declared regulated dog regardless of age.

The implantation must be done by an Accredited Implanter.

The vets at Northgate Veterinary Surgery have the appropriate qualifications and are Accredited Implanters.

Prior to implantation we ensure that the microchip functions correctly, implant it aseptically and recheck that it is functioning correctly after implantation. We ensure that all of your contact details are captured correctly and send the registration paperwork to the Australasian Animal Registry for you. You will receive a confirmation in the post from the registry within a couple of weeks, whereafter you are able to update your contact details via the internet when necessary.

Please note that you will still have to register your dog with Brisbane City Council, since the council and the registry are NOT linked.

Please give us a ring if you are unsure of the new legislation and require clarification.
