Desexing

Desexing is recommended for all pets that are not breeding animals. Aside from preventing unwanted pregnancies and litters of unwanted puppies and kittens; there are several health and behaviour benefits too.

Benefits include reduced risks of:

  • development of certain cancers in male and female animals;
  • uterine, prostatic and other reproductive tract infections;
  • undesirable behaviours in adult animals.

Desexing is usually done at six months of age

Once you have booked an appointment, we will send you a booking letter detailing all the information you need to ensure that your pet is prepared for the procedure. Once your pet is admitted and prior to the operation, the vet on duty will give your pet a thorough physical exam as well as draw blood for pre-anaesthetic blood tests if required. We use the safest anaesthetics available and have a veterinary nurse in attendance throughout the procedure; who is dedicated to monitoring your pet's anaesthetic and safe recovery while the veterinary surgeon performs the operation. We always administer pain relief medication as well as offer you the option of administering additional pain relief medication if you so request. Despite desexing operations being fairly major procedures, your pet will almost certainly be discharged in the afternoon and be able to spend the night at home in his/her familiar surroundings. On discharge, you will receive information leaflets on how best to take care of your pet over the next few days. A follow-up check is made for 10 days after the procedure when the wound healing is checked and sutures removed. This check is usually free of charge. If you have any questions about the procedure, you are more than welcome to discuss them with any of the vets or nurses at the practice.

Desexing procedures are offered at subsidised rates as we believe that preventing a population explosion of unwanted puppies and kittens is extremely important. Despite offering the service at a much lower cost, we adhere to strict policies of extremely safe anaesthetics, use the same high-quality surgical equipment that we use for other surgeries, as well as modern human-equivalent suture materials.
